Holland (just as parts of Belgium and Britain) was hit by flooding in february 1953. Hundreds of people died and damage was enormous. A lot of roads had also been flooded and could not or only hardly be used for emergency purposes. Freeway 15 (still only one carriageway) under water, Alblasserwaard, 1953.

Heerenveen interchange today is a cloverleaf, but it has been a very interesting roundabout for many many years. It had 6 (!) roads leading towards it and a gasoline-station.

This was no problem with traffic-conditions in 1965, when this picture was taken. After reconstruction of the A7 en A32 into motorways it was replaced by the new cloverleaf in 1998.

In 1963 the german en dutch motorway networks connected near Elten/Bergh. (NL-A12, D-A3). This was the first modern motorway-customs in Europe. Today the roof and barriers have been removed and thanks to the open inside-European borders it is possible to drive through at 100 km/h (63 mph).
